Chaofeng Liu
Founder of ACME Data Analysis and Services, LLC
Chaofeng Liu's journey to becoming a respected figure in the pharmaceutical and biostatistics fields was shaped early on by a deep fascination with patterns, data, and the logical systems that govern the world. Born and raised in Beijing, China, he embarked on his academic journey at Peking University, where he earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Probability and Statistics.
From the outset of his academic career, Chaofeng's curiosity was matched by a strong leadership drive. At Peking University, he took on multiple leadership roles. He received several honors, such as the Outstanding Student Fellowship and the Young Scientist Award, recognizing his commitment to academic excellence.
For Chaofeng, statistics was never just a theoretical discipline; it represented an opportunity to make tangible, real-world contributions. This passion led him to the United States, where he completed a Ph.D. in Biostatistics at UCLA and an Executive MBA from Purdue University. With his technical expertise and a growing understanding of business strategy, he set out to impact the healthcare sector.
Bridging Science and Healthcare
Chaofeng Liu has spent over 22 years navigating the intersection of science, strategy, and human health. Throughout his career, he has worked in various therapeutic areas, including neuroscience and oncology, contributing to all stages of clinical development, from early research to regulatory submission and product approval.
His professional journey began at Eli Lilly, where Chaofeng became a key contributor to statistical and process innovation. As he advanced, he took on senior roles in leading global organizations like Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Forest Laboratories, PAREXEL, and Astellas Pharmaceuticals. At each stop, he was recognized for his strategic mindset, leadership abilities, and respect for the scientific process.
One of the pivotal moments of his career came during his time at Astellas, where he played a central role in developing Gilteritinib, a groundbreaking treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Chaofeng led the team responsible for taking Gilteritinib from early-stage trials to Accelerated Approval and full approval by the FDA, PMDA, and EMA.
Innovating the Field of Biostatistics
Innovation is a cornerstone of Chaofeng’s approach to biostatistics. He has always sought ways to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of clinical trials without compromising their scientific integrity. At Astellas, he led the development of adaptive trial designs that streamlined the clinical trial process, making it more responsive to patients' needs.
Over the years, Chaofeng has developed and implemented novel statistical methodologies, many of which have become standard practice in the industry. His contributions have been featured in leading medical journals, such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, and Statistics in Medicine.
Leading Teams and Shaping Company Culture
Chaofeng’s contributions go beyond statistical innovation; he has also built teams and cultivated a culture of excellence. As the Vice President of Biometrics and Data Management at EpimAb Biotherapeutics, he played a key role in building the department from the ground up. He recruited talent, established organizational structures, and implemented systems to support the company’s expanding clinical pipeline.
As the founder of ACME Data Analysis and Services, LLC, Chaofeng now provides statistical consulting services to biotech companies such as Immunocore, Kyverna, Fate, BlueSphere, and CareDx. He focuses on complex statistical issues in clinical studies and communications with regulatory agencies, particularly oncology drug development.
A Legacy of Mentorship and Academic Involvement
While Chaofeng's career has primarily been rooted in industry, he has maintained strong academic ties. For over a decade, he has been an adjunct professor in the Department of Statistics at Purdue University, where he shares his knowledge and real-world experience with students.
His dedication to the statistical community extends beyond the classroom. Chaofeng has been active in professional organizations, serving as President and Program Chair of the ASA Northern Indiana Chapter in 2013, 2017, and 2018. He has organized conferences and led technical sessions at the Joint Statistical Meetings, always striving to foster learning and collaboration within the statistical community.
Humility and Excellence
Despite his many achievements, Chaofeng remains humble. He does not seek attention for his numerous awards and accolades, including the Astellas President Award and industry recognition for his work in oncology drug development. Those who know him describe him as approachable, patient, and committed to doing things correctly, whether solving a complex statistical problem or mentoring a young scientist.
Statistics with Purpose
What sets Chaofeng Liu apart is his sense of mission. He is not just a statistician; he seeks to make a meaningful difference. As he celebrates his 60th birthday this year, he remains dedicated to advancing statistical methodology, supporting biotech startups, and mentoring the next generation of statisticians.
From his base in West Lafayette, Indiana, Chaofeng quietly shapes the future of clinical research and biostatistics, contributing to a legacy that transcends individual accomplishments. His work reflects a deep commitment to the science of statistics and the people it serves.
